The biggest filter in your home is your carpet and rugs!

Most people are very concerned about better health. We try to buy healthy foods, we take supplements and vitamins. We do our best to visit our doctor regularly. We drink filtered water. What we might not be grateful for is the value of filtered air in our homes or business.

What is the best way of filtering the air in your home? You are right… replacing the filters in your furnace or HVAC system on a regular, scheduled basis. If you wait for way too long, you realize it when you pull out the filter, because it is very dirty. It could make a mess when you change it. So you promise to change it more frequently, and perhaps you even add it to your calendar so you don’t forget. You might even purchase a higher quality filter, like the one that uses HEPA standards.

But what is the biggest filter in your home? Do you wonder what it could be? Just look down… if you have carpet, that’s the filter and it often gets neglected. If you don’t have much carpet, it’s likely that you have a few area rugs covering your hardwood or tile floors. Of course, those area rugs are considered to be filters as well.

Don’t forget to clean that big filter!

Having a carpet in a home is certainly beneficial for you, because it traps all kinds of allergens that can be the nuisance to people suffering from asthma. Since carpet is a filter and, like all filters, has to be either replaced or cleaned. It’s not reasonable to change your carpet every 6 to 12 months or so, but you can, and should have it cleaned. Regular vacuuming with a high quality vacuum can help keep this filter clean.

In general, allergens are respiratory concerns , because they are very light and float in the air, especially for allergy and asthma sufferers. Carpet fiber helps to keep those impurities to a minimum.

Studies have been done about how households and facilities, such as schools, are healthier because of carpet and regular cleaning schedules.

So be pleased that you have a carpet… and have it cleaned by Tidy Guy!

That is a question we hear at Tidy Guy Carpet Cleaning often! Read on to get the answer:

Vacuums are Your Friend

These days there are way too many people who don’t like vacuuming. Why should they? There is nothing relaxing about pushing a heavy vacuum around, and fighting the tangled cord. Of course that doesn’t apply if you have one of those light cordless vacuums. Cordless vacuums are great for picking up small dirt on the surface, but I would not recommend them for heavy duty cleaning/vacuuming. If you really want to remove as much of the dust and dirt from the carpet, you are better using a well built vacuum that has very good suction, and a reliable beater bar. Did you know that approximately 60 % of soil can be removed from your carpet by vacuuming? That includes all of the common household carpet settlers – dust particles, hair, dander, dry dirt from shoes, food bits, etc. Your carpet acts as a filter and all of those dry soils and particles rest among the carpet fibers until you extract them by vacuuming. So, carpets are a filter that allows less particles to circulate in the air and that is a very important function that hardwood or other hard surfaces can’t provide. However, because the carpet is a filter it needs to be taken care of on a regular basis. How often should you be vacuuming?

How Often Should I Vacuum?

Tidy Guy recommends that you vacuum at least twice a week, especially the heavily used areas. However, if you have pets living with you, I would recommend vacuuming every day. Does it sound a little crazy? Considering that pets tend to shed more hair than humans and tend to bring in occasional unwanted visitors such as ticks or a fleas, it sounds pretty reasonable. Human skin also sheds hundreds of thousands of particles each and every day. People with allergies should also try to make a habit to vacuum frequently, because the allergens and pollutants in the carpet could cause unwanted health related reactions or discomfort. Plus, if you vacuum often, you won’t have to get your carpet cleaned as often. To effectively vacuum the carpet make sure to move different directions and take your time, that way you will extract more from the carpet. Just remember that by vacuuming you will make your carpet look cleaner, your home environment cleaner and your family and friends will enjoy visiting you more!

And don’t forget to call us if you need your carpets cleaned!

Specialty Carpet Stain Removal

I rarely see a carpet that would not have some sort of stain. It is a common and hardly avoidable occurrence. Some stains happen because of spills, a child drawing on carpet with a marker, paint spots from a recent DIY project, pet accidents, and then there are those that happen unknowingly such as rust from metal objects, water rings from flowers, or furniture dye stains.

What are carpet stains in the first place?

Stains are basically a form of discoloration that, in most cases, cannot be removed with normal carpet cleaning. Some stains get into the fiber such as fruit punches, urine, tea, coffee, dyes etc. In order to remove them they have to be chemically altered and extracted. Other substances and stains only stay on the outside of the fiber such as lipstick, chewing gum, adhesive etc. These have to be successfully dissolved first, in order for them to be extracted. Stain removal is not a one-fits-all treatment as some might think. For instance, stains that are organic need to be treated differently than petroleum stains. The same applies to protein stains which require different action than synthetic dye stains for example.

Since stains need specialty treatment, I recommend you call the specialist in stain removal – Tidy Guy!

Although many stains can be removed, occasionally some stains will not budge like some red dyes.

If you have encountered black stains around heat vents – along walls and under doors then you know what I mean by filtration soiling. These stains are very difficult to remove. We are experts at this as well. They do require some effort but as you can see by these pictures – they can be cleaned up!

Have you ever heard of stain wickback?

Sometimes large amount of liquids (e.g., spilled beverage, or pet accident) can completely saturate the carpet and get into the padding beneath the carpet. If those spills dry out, they will become embedded in the backing or pad. During the carpet cleaning those spots will be reactivated, and the embedded dirt in the backing/pad starts slowly traveling toward the tips of the fiber causing staining to reappear hours or days after the carpet has been cleaned. Wickback can be difficult to treat, happens mostly to berber carpet, and sometimes pad replacement is advisable. If this happens, make sure to mention it, so that Tidy Guy can do his best to alleviate the issue.

What is my recommendation?

The longer the stain stays untreated, the smaller the chance of successful removal of it. Also – don’t use any store bought miracle solutions – they may actually set the stain and make it impossible to remove!

Dealing with stains is similar to dealing with a toothache. The longer you do nothing about it, the more difficult it will be to successfully treat it. Call Tidy Guy at (434) 260-1020 and he will be happy to help you with stain removal!

Spring Cleaning Should Always Include Your Carpets!

Spring cleaning is often a ritual. For many, spring is a time of rebirth, and the simplest way of feeling renewed is a fresh overhaul of the interior of your home. This way, we can mentally and physically transfer our winter lethargy into a springtime energization. For some, however spring cleaning can be intimidating. Where do I start? There’s so much to do! Don’t feel overwhelmed. Here’s some tips from Tidy Guy for all of you living in Charlottesville, VA and beyond on getting started.

Spring Cleaning Plans

It might sound silly, but start with a plan. List the rooms in your house without forgetting about the laundry room, various closets and other small spaces you might normally overlook. Continue listing or make a mind map, beginning with your normal cleaning tasks and then venturing outside the box to name tasks you don’t normally approach.

Take your time and allot yourself several days to handle spring cleaning. Many people recommend a divide-and-conquer technique to tackling your home. Break down your list into manageable chunks. Where do your start? Start with wherever you feel needs to be cleaned most urgently.

Supplies for Spring Cleaning

Next, make sure you have all the supplies you need. If you have to, go back to your list or mind map and, from there, make a list of all the supplies you’ll need to handle these tasks. Now, go through your cleaning cabinets and compare. Before you begin spring cleaning, make sure to buy any supplies you don’t already have. Look to repurpose some kitchen items such as vinegar and baking soda, to create cleaning solutions. This can save you money in the long run if you already have these items in your home. Avoid paper towels; opt for microfiber cloths instead.

To get into the right headspace, you might want to start with decluttering and organizing. With each item your pick up, ask yourself, “does this item enrich my life and serve a purpose?” If not, put it aside into a bin for items you wish to sell or donate.

If you’re unsure about a place to start physically cleaning, why not start at the top? We don’t mean to go up to the attic, but begin with the ceilings and work downward. Dust and clean the ceilings, moldings and light fixtures first. Next, wipe down the walls, clean and scrub the windows (both sides), dust and sanitize framed pictures and art.

Final Thoughts on Spring Cleaning

Our biggest piece of advice? Start early in the day. As they say, the early bird gets the worm. Pick a clear, winter day, open your home’s blinds, put on some relaxing music or an audiobook, and get work. Those harsh, cold days at the tail end of winter are perfect for cleaning and preparing for warmer days to come.

The snow is melting and the sun is setting later. That can only mean one thing – spring is here. Making the transition from hibernating in your home in the cold of winter, to opening your home up for the warmth of spring, can be a challenge. Spring cleaning and carpet cleaning require patience, strength and sometimes a professional such as Tidy Guy. While you may want to begin with a standard home cleaning like you would any other weekend, here are four major spots in your home that you may want to focus on with this spring’s cleaning.

Tips for Removing Spots on Your Cabinets

Your cabinets suffer from a lot of buildup in their lifetimes. Not running the exhaust hood on your stove while cooking causes a lot of buildup on the exterior of your cabinets. Inside your cabinets, dust tends to accumulate in the dark corners of the shelves and hinges. To remove exterior build-up, spray a cabinet cleaner for wood surfaces onto a wash cloth and softly go over the surface. Use a toothbrush dipped in the cleaner to scrub the wood, the trim and the door hinges. Open the cabinet and go over the inside of the door and the cabinet interior with a cleaned rag to clean any dust and spills.

Window Spots and How to Remove Them

Your windows don’t get overlooked, but you may not be cleaning them correctly. For a thorough cleaning, don’t simply spray and wipe down the inside of your windows. Wash your windows with soapy water and a big, thick sponge. Get the inside, especially, since that’s the spot most susceptible to handprints and spearing, but don’t ignore the outside. Scrub down the outside of your windows on a cloudy day to keep the sun from drying the cleanser.

Food Spots in Your Oven

When used regularly, your oven collects a ridiculous amount of grime. Foods drip onto the floor, crust over the tray and spray onto the inside of the door. If you turn on your oven and, with no food inside, things start burning, that is a sign that your oven needs to be cleaned. Take the time this spring to heavily clean the inside (and outside) of your oven. Chip pieces of burnt food from the tray, floor and walls. For any food that won’t chip away, spray ammonia on those spots to loosen them up. Sprinkle baking soda and a couple drops of vinegar along the oven floor. Clean thoroughly with a sponge once the baking soda and vinegar solution begins to bubble up. Your oven will look and smell fresh and clean.

Removing Spots from Outdoor Furniture

Your outdoor furniture needs to be cleaned at least once a year, but the process is very easy. Throw the cushions in the washer while spraying down the chairs with a solution made from warm water and dish soap. After, let the cushions air dry as your hose down the furniture with water. Let the chairs dry in the sun before putting them back together.

There are many, many things that need to be done for Spring cleaning every year. Being thorough is very important when it comes to Spring cleaning. A clean home is a happy home.

He’s cuddly, adorable and you like him a lot, but occasionally he has an issue with “accidents”, and pretty soon, you start to notice the… ummm… funky smelling air and pet stains.

Besides the sporadic accident from Buddy, his hair can create a problem as well. Once he shakes a bit off, it goes into the carpet and furniture and clings to it all, and it can be quite a headache.

Then you have the issue of Buddy going outside, inside, outside, inside. You know it… Buddy is always lively and the perpetual going outside and then back inside brings in all sorts of dirt.

The result of all of these issues…pet stains and odors.

What can you do to remove pet stains and odors?

Try to clean up his mess ASAP. Once you notice an “accident,” it is important to get a few paper towels and blot up the mess before it penetrates into the padding of the carpet. A good enzyme deodorizer like you might get from the vet is a temporary band-aid for odors, but of course it would be ideal to have a professional carpet cleaner come over to take care of these odor challenges.

A hairy situation can be partially prevented by brushing your dog often. Loose hair that’s about to go into the carpet and furniture can be easily pulled from Buddy with a good grooming brush. And guess what? Some dogs even love being brushed!

While you may feel it’s not necessary to wipe off Buddy’s muddy paws each time he wants back inside, it is a good idea to place mats inside and outside the door. When Buddy want’s back inside, let him wait a little bit on the outside mat because some of that dirt will certainly come off.

Important Points to Note about Pet Stains

Pet stains and odors are tricky because they don’t always stay on the surface. Even when a spot looks clean, odor-causing bacteria can linger deep in carpet fibers, padding, and upholstery. This is why pet smells often seem to “come back” on humid days or after vacuuming. Moisture reactivates those hidden residues, releasing odors back into the air.

Common Errors with Pet Stains

It’s also important to avoid common DIY mistakes. Scrubbing a pet stain aggressively can actually spread it further into the carpet and damage the fibers. Using strong household cleaners or fragrances may mask the smell temporarily, but they don’t neutralize the source. In some cases, they can even set the stain, making professional treatment more difficult later on.

Professional Cleaning for Pet Stains

Routine deep cleaning plays a huge role in pet-friendly homes. Even the most well-trained pets leave behind oils, dander, and microscopic debris that vacuuming alone can’t remove. Scheduling professional carpet and upholstery cleaning helps lift out what’s trapped below the surface, leaving your home fresher, healthier, and more comfortable for both people and pets.

If pet accidents are a recurring issue, addressing the problem early can save you time, money, and frustration. Professional cleaners have specialized tools and pet-safe solutions designed to target stubborn odors at their source. The result is not just a cleaner carpet, but a home that smells clean again, without harsh chemicals or overpowering scents. With a little prevention, quick response to accidents, and occasional professional care, you can enjoy all the love Buddy brings without the lingering reminders. After all, a clean home makes it easier to focus on what really matters—extra cuddles, happy tail wags, and fewer “funky” surprises.

Did you know that one of the biggest decisions you will ever make involves whom you welcome into your home? No, we aren’t talking about relatives, friends, or even your four-legged companions. While they are all important, we’re talking about something many homeowners overlook: choosing the right service company to work inside their home.

Any time you invite a company into your personal space, you are placing trust in their people, their equipment, and their integrity. This is especially true when hiring a carpet cleaning professional. Your carpets, furniture, and flooring are part of your everyday environment, and the company you choose should treat them with care and respect.

Unfortunately, many service companies today fall short when it comes to listening to customer needs. Homeowners expect quality workmanship, reliability, and good communication, yet too often they experience rushed jobs, missed appointments, or disappointing results. This is why choosing a true carpet cleaning professional makes such a difference.

So what should you expect when hiring a carpet cleaning professional to work in your home?

Quality Work

A carpet cleaning professional should do exactly what they promise. This means using proper equipment, safe cleaning solutions, and proven methods to thoroughly clean carpets, tile and grout, and upholstery. Quality work isn’t about speed—it’s about doing the job correctly and delivering noticeable results.

Reliability and Respect for Your Time

When a carpet cleaning professional schedules an appointment, they should arrive on time and communicate clearly if delays occur. Your time matters, and a dependable company respects your schedule just as much as their own.

Professional Appearance and Conduct

A reputable carpet cleaning professional should look and act the part. Clean vehicles, uniformed technicians, and courteous behavior all help create a sense of trust. If a company takes pride in its appearance, it’s a strong indication they’ll take pride in cleaning your home.

Customer Service You Can Trust

The best carpet cleaning professionals take time to answer questions, explain their process, and make sure you are satisfied with the results. They listen to your concerns and customize their services to meet your needs instead of offering a one-size-fits-all solution.

At the end of the day, this is your home. When it comes to protecting your investment and maintaining a clean, healthy living space, always choose a carpet cleaning professional who values quality, reliability, and professionalism. The right choice will give you peace of mind—and cleaner carpets you can truly enjoy.
